We offer individualized instruction with qualified, creative instructors who are passionate about music. Our instructors are comfortable with a variety of different music styles and encourage students to learn music that they enjoy. We welcome private students from young beginners to the young at heart.
Tuition rates are set according to the length of your reserved lesson time and the teacher you are studying with. Because many of our teachers are registered with the BC Registered Music Teachers Association, we are not permitted to post their individual rates online. However, we are happy to email our tuition fee schedule .

Beginners wanting to learn the guitar and experienced guitarists looking to improve their skills are welcome to inquire about guitar instruction at Motif. Our instructors are versatile and experienced with a variety of music styles. Jazz, Blues, Rock, Folk & Classical instruction is now available. Private Saxophone / Clarinet Lessons
Our instructor, Rachel Fuller, is an accomplished Saxophonist / Clarinetist and is now accepting students at Motif Music Studios. Lessons are ideal for students playing these instruments in band at school and wanting to develop further skill on their instrument, musicians wanted to polish technical aspects and learn new repertoire or beginners looking forward to learning a new instrument.
Workshops & Recitals
Private students will enjoy the opportunity to participate in group workshops and recitals throughout the year. These sessions give students the opportunity to share their music or learn within a creative group environment. We will post dates and workshop themes throughout the year. Motif students receive 2 groups class registrations and 1 recital registration along with their tuition. Students age 5 - 9 years old will enjoy learning the basics of composing in a fun, hands-on way. This is a great class for students who currently love to compose or for students who ever never written their own music, but would like to try.

This class is perfect for boys who are wanting some music review, but not wanting to sit still for a 'lecture'. This class will be active with relays and games to reinforce concepts students are studying in their private lessons, including rhythm, notes, dynamics and more.

Spring 2012 Workshop Series
Class: Improvising at the Piano with Jazz Pianist Peter Friesen Date: March 24, 2012 Time: 1:00pm - 2:30pm Location: Stan Hagen Theatre, North Island College
The North Island branch of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association and Motif Music Studios are very excited to co-host an improvising workshop for students with Jazz pianist and teacher, Peter Friesen.
Peter is excited to share ideas with students and encourage them to explore improvising at the piano. Students of all ages and most levels are welcome to participate in this hands-on workshop - please note they need to be able to play a 5-finger scale or triad and be able to participate in a longer (1.5 hour) workshop to be able to attend.
Motif students registration fee for this class is included with tuition for the year & additional students may participate at a special fee of $5.00 because of the sponsorship of the BCRMTA. Class: Beginners Tone Chime Choir Date: March 24, 2012 Time: 3:00pm - 4:00pm Location: Stan Hagen Theatre, North Island College
Motif students will have the very special opportunity to learn the tone chimes at this one-hour workshop. Jean Schoenfelder, the teacher who saved teacher Amie's enthusiasm for music in her teens and encouraged her to start teaching music, will be giving students the wonderful opportunity to play a professional set of tone chimes and enjoy learning a piece together.
There is a limit of 24 participants in this class. For the beginners tone chime class, Jean will be conducting students, so even the young beginners can take part! If you can read music at the grade 1 or 2 level or above, you can take part in the Intermediate Tone Chime Choir.
If students enjoy this opportunity and would like to enroll in an 8-week tone chime choir this Spring, please let us know, as plans are underway for offering this on a more permanent basis.

Students who comfortably read music and understand the basics of rhythm will enjoy trying something new! Jean Schoenfelder will be introducing students to a professional set of 'tone chimes' and learning pieces together for the one hour class.
There is a limit of 12 participants in this class, so be sure to let us know if you would like to come!

Jazz guitarist and teacher Jeff Drummond will be presenting Motif's first guitar workshop! Students are invited to bring along their guitars (and tuners) and get ready to enjoy learning to play together as a 'guitar-chestra'. Adult students of all ages and levels are invited to put nerves aside and share their music with a welcoming group of important citizens in the Comox Valley. This is a wonderful opportunity to share a duet or solo to a most appreciative audience.

Fall 2011 Workshop Series
Class: Composer Celebration - Ages 5 - 10 Date: November 19, 2011 Time: 2:00 - 3:00pm Location: Stan Hagen Theatre, NIC
Students ages 5 - 10 are invited to learn about two famous composers. We will be focusing on the lives and music of both a piano composer and a guitar composer. The class will be interactive and allow young musicians to enjoy learning about famous composers in a fun, hands-on way.
Class: Performance Preparation Workshop - Beginner / Junior Level Date: November 19, 2011 Time: 3:00 - 4:00pm Location: Stan Hagen Theatre, NIC
This class is especially for beginner and Junior level students in any instrument. There will be some games & fun interaction to keep the mood light and help prepare students to perform for recitals, festivals, exams or even for family during the holiday season! Students can prepare to share one piece with the class. The piece does not need to be memorized. Please ask your teacher to suggest one of your pieces that would be suitable for this class.
Class: Guest Workshop with Kevin Ngo - Ages 11+ Date: November 19, 2011 Time: 4:15 - 5:15pm Location: Stan Hagen Theatre, NIC
What an honor to have Kevin Ngo from Victoria (former student of Cindy Taylor) share piano music and his experiences in music with Motif students. Kevin is a young man who has pursued his music studies at UVIC with May Ling Kwok and completed his Bachelor of Music Studies program in 2010. While in Victoria, Ngo was a 2010 and 2011 recipient of Adjudicator's Awards and the 2009 Dave Paulsen Award as a participant in the Victoria Music Festival. Additionally in 2009, he was presented with Rotary International's Paul Harris Fellowship and was also the beneficiary of the Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarship and Madeline Till Scholarship, the former allowing him to attend the Universität Mozarteum Sommerakademie in Salzburg, Austria.

This class is designed to help prepare young musicians to enjoy sharing their music with others. Performing can be enjoyable with adequate preparation and 'practicing' performing is one important way to gain confidence in sharing your music with others. Students should come prepared to share one piece for the class. This class is important for students looking to improve their ability to perform under pressure as well as a necessary step for students working towards exam & festival goals. Please discuss what piece you will be sharing with your instructor.
Class: A Little Night's Music - ESPECIALLY for Adult Students Date: November 27, 2011 Time: 7:00pm Location: Motif Music Studios, Tin Town
Are you excited about playing an instrument, but maybe a little apprehensive to play for others? This class is perfect for you. Adult students will be encouraged to prepare a piece to share as 'background music' at Motif. Refreshments will be provided. Goals are a great way to see progress in your music studies and this is a fun way to meet other musicians of all levels and enjoy sharing the joy of music.
2011/2012 Group Theory Classes
Music History: Explorations 1 - A Music History Overview
Students will enjoy learning about 4 different eras of music history. This class provides an interactive group environment for students to learn about repertoire from each of these eras and learn about key composers that shaped the sound of music in their time. This class is ongoing until the end of April.

Theory Rudiments: Intermediate
This group theory class will prepare students for the May 2012 RCM Intermediate Rudiments exams. Students will also have the opportunity to enjoy learning alongside other students in a positive group environment. This class is ongoing until the end of April.

Intermediate Piano Pedagogy
Participants will be challenged to think through the methods and principals of teaching. Students will be well prepared to take the Intermediate Piano Pedagogy written and Viva Voce classes, if they choose. Instructor Cindy Taylor presents this course with a true love of teaching and a passion for teaching students musically and with a careful technical approach.
